Laboratory testing

Confirmation of malaria infection with laboratory testing can be done by either microscopic or non-microscopic tests.

Microscopic tests

These test involve staining samples and direct visual confirmation under the microscope for the presence of the parasite.

  • Peripheral smear study
  • Quantitative Buffy Coat (QBC) test

Non-microscopic tests

These tests use the parasitic antigen or antiplasmodial antibodies or parasitic metabolic products to identify infection.

  • Para Sight F test

  • Immuno chromatographic test (ICT Malaria P. f. test)
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction
  • Detecting antibodies by Radio immunoassay, immunofluorescence or enzyme immunoassay.
