The ingredient doxycycline has been the trusted form of treatment for preventing malaria some time, but this form of medication must be taken once daily - with a meal at the same time each day (with adequate fluid) - for 2 days before arrival in a malaria area, during your stay and be continued for 4 weeks after leaving the area.

This is one of the cheapest available anti-malaria drugs.
Side effects
People may become photosensitive while taking a doxycycline and to prevent sunburn, use good sun-block creams, covering clothes and a hat.
Taking the medication on a full stomach seems to lessen the nausea caused, but a person should not lie down for at least 60 minutes after taking this medication to prevent reflux of the drug.
Doxycycline should not be prescribed to children under 8 years since it could permanently stain the teeth and must not be taken at all by pregnant women. Females are also prone to develop a yeast infection while taking doxycycline.
Although doxycycline has been replaced in usage to a large extent by mefloquine
(Larium TM) it is interesting to note that doxycycline (as well as the atovaquone and proguanil combination) are used where mefloquine resistant malaria is found, such as the southern states of Burma as well as the border area of Burma, Thailand and Cambodia.
Other measures
Although being on an anti-malaria drug treatment course is a must when entering a high-risk malaria area, it is still the best to take other precautions as well to avoid being bitten in the first place. Click here for some ideas.
