Atovaquone and proguanil combination (Malarone TM)The combination of these two active ingredients is an effective alternative for those not being able to use either doxycycline or mefloquine and is sold under the brand name Malarone TM. The two anti-malaria agents atovaquone and proguanil hydrochlorine helps to prevent the replication of malaria inside and outside the red blood cell. This medication must be taken daily and should be started 2 days before entering a malaria-risk area, during your stay as well as seven days after leaving. Side effectsThis anti-malaria drug is relatively expensive but does not have major side effects, but for a few individuals may include reactions such as like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headaches.
